In what follows, I shall argue that two sets of data composing apparently similar nominal constructionsmust be distinguished Ο Γεωργιάδης ο καθηγητής is different from ο Γεωργιάδης, οκαθηγητής m that each exhibits quite different phonological, syntactic and semantic propertiesOnly the second instance must be considered as genuine apposition here, the second NP is set offby comma intonation from the first and is not syntactically connected with it - ι e it is aparenthetical NP - whereas m the first construction the two juxtaposed NPs form one tone groupand are syntactically related, the second NP is a kind of restrictive same - case modifier of the first,as it justifies the defunte article preceding it In genuine apposition, or what will be termedexemplification, the two NPs are pragmatically coreferential (or synonymous), whereas m themodification construction they are not The explanation of the different status of the two constructionsis based on the pragmatic principle of optimal relevance and gives priority to the primaryrole of the speaker's/hearer's assumptions,, beliefs, intentions, knowledge, etc m the act of communication.
