Abstract:
Speaking of bilinguism in the European areas, the case of the turkish-speaking minority of N.E. Greece is by all means a member of the already existing european bilingual communities groups. It is the first time that the linguistic situation of this population, distinguished from its environment not only linguistically but also religiously and culturally, is being studied. Is there a distinction to be found in thc status of these two languages when used by the city or rural population? Which is the status of the speakers - does the difference between unilingual (turkish-speaking) and bilingual population really exist? Which is the attitude of the speakers towards these two languages, their mother and their second language: negative, positive or neutral? Which can be the future of this bilingual situation, as far as the turkish and greek languages are concerned, when under the term lies this particular form of language used by the bilingual members of this particular linguisticommunity: continuation of bilinguism or domination of one language over the other? After a research made by the author in Western Thrace, in the present article we will try to give an answer to these questions.
