Abstract:
This study analyses the different semiotic systems of the theatre code, following the basic categories of Kowzan and Fischer-Lichte with some modifications. Acoustical and optical sign systems are exarnined systematically, as well as those of the actor and the scenic space, in their relationship with the corresponding sign systems of the surrounding culture and society, and their specific theatrical use is pointed out. The whole of these sign systems with their possible combinations and meanings forms a systematic frame of theory, in which all known historical theatre codes are moving.
