Analysing the concept of deaf identity

Abstract:
This study explored the identity styles of twenty prelingually deaf adults in Greece,through semi-structured interviews. Three emerged identities were identified among theparticipants, including the culturally Deaf, the culturally hearing and the biculturalparticipants. The identity styles of the participants reflect their views regarding their culturalidentification, their language preferences and their social and personal relationships, whichare analysed and discussed. Finally, special emphasis is given to the participants with abicultural identity and their struggle to balance among different worlds.
