Abstract:
This paper proposes that, in the past, the difficulties in applying cognitive behaviortherapy (CBT) with children derived from the lack of an integral theoretical framework.Such a theoretical framework should integrate several features: developmentalconsiderations, social and emotional development, and the nature of child informationprocessing. Whereas the main components in adult CBT comprise the understanding oflinks between thoughts, emotions, and behavior and the understanding of one's ability tocreate change, the main component in child CBT constitutes skill acquisition. That is, inorder to achieve change, children must undergo training and practice in the application ofappropriate skills. This paper ties these key components together in a cognitive interventionwith children who evidence aggressive behavior.
