Contributions of magnetoencephalography to neurolinguistics : evidence from cross-linguistic studies

Abstract:
The present data support the cross-language generalizability of a language protocol that was originally developed for patients with English as their primary language. The utility of such confirmatory studies lies in their ability to replicate prior studies as well as provide a novel contribution to understanding the brain mechanisms of cognitive functions. More specifically, the results of this study suggest that the right hemisphere might play a different role in language functions in tonal languages (Mandarin Chinese). MEG-based language mapping plays an important role in pre-surgical evaluation in various brain pathologies, due to the tremendous clinical implications of language mechanisms localization for patients undergoing surgery, as well as their contribution to basic investigation in neurolinguistics.
