Abstract:
Saint Gregorius Nissus is characterized «as the introducer of a lowcanonical preparatory commitee» beginning from the fact that in the Collections of the holy canons we have eight canons that belong to him and they are based on a canonical letter of his to Litoio Bishop of Melitini. We can’t, however, consider him as a canonslator (but as a legislator only). Only an Oecumenical Synod can be called canonslator, with the real meaning of the term. And that is, because canons are literally those that are decreed or adapted by the unmistakable representative of the unmistakable Church, that is by the Oecumenical Synod.Only the canonical arrangements of the Oecumenical Synods, that is the canons, can indicate to us with certainty, what is right, what is fair, what is honest throughout the years. And that’s exactly the reason why they are entitled to be called canons. All the other arrangements that are based on local Synods or on fathers of the Church, can’t claim with certainty the unmistakable and the right or can’t be characterized as canons, at least till they are confirmed by an Oecumenical Synod.Surely however, the Fathers of the Church with the deep knowledge and the experience of the Christian revelation and the Ecclesiastic tradition and truth may be introducers of a regulating arrangement, of a cannon.Saint Gregorius Nissus was an introducer of this kind. And this characteristic suits him perfectly, because in the texts eight canons of his, which were approved of Penthekti Oecumenical Synod (2nd canon), don’t include arrangements of strictly canonical-practical nature, but also include theoretical teaching or dogmatic - ethical pre-theory. But apart from this characterization of Saint Gregorius as an introducer of ecclesiastic canons, he is entitled to be also characterized as an introducer of cosmic low- preparatory committee, because the above theoretical and practical beliefs of his have influenced on the law science as well as on the cosmic legislation, the same as they have influenced the principles of the law of the Church on society, in general.
