Τhis study aimed at exploring the age differences in early elementary students' strategic behavior during mathematical problem solving, in their self-perceptions of abilities in mathematics and in their cognitive performance. 167 first- and second-graders' different strategic behaviors were recorded using a structured observation instrument by two independent observers. Their cognitive performance and their self-perceptions of mathematics abilities were also assessed. The results showed that second-graders outperformed first-graders in their cognitive performance and in most of the strategic behaviors assessed. Students' self-perceptions of mathematics abilities did not differ significantly. The results are discussed within the frame of developing self-regulated learning in young students.
