Our basic belief is that the investigation of personal theory of teaching is an important issue since it gives the chance to teachers to analyse their professional identity and realise that their professional growth depends on their personal objectives, preferences and values. The analysis of basic methodological approaches of personal theory of teaching shows that each approach has specific characteristics with concrete advantages and disadvantages. It is suggested that we can overcome the dilemma of choosing between a qualitative or a quantitative methodological approach of personal theory of teaching if we follow a synthesis of approaches which may enable an in depth analysis of teachers' "personal histories" and preferences. In this way the researcher may draw valid conclusions on the meaning that teachers give to the models of their professional development. Furthermore, teachers may have the chance to make their choices and their possibilities on their teaching more explicit.
