The aim of this article is to propose an ILL model for Greek libraries. The article starts with an extensive overview of the current international situation regarding ILL activities, trends, software and standards with the aim to identify what are the main issues, technologies and tools available for the development of a modern ILL mechanism. It, then, proceeds with an overview of the current state of Library and Information Services in Greece with the aim to identify the viability of such a project and the key partners of an ILL scheme in this country. Based on the current level of development of the LIS in Greece and the relative position of the several library categories and groups in the country, the article suggests that: a) The development of an ILL mechanism is possible; b) Such a mechanism could only be based on a cooperative scheme involving the academic and special libraries of the country, the National Documentation Centre and the tools developed by these library groups and institutions. The proposed model is, then, described in terms of the partners to be involved, the main aims, the decisions to be made, the standards to be used and the basic functional loops (documents and data) of the whole mechanism
