The limited access of migrant children to non-compulsory education and their difficulty in dealing with the demands of secondary school (years 7, 8, 9) emphasize the need for developing and implementing more effective instructional methods in mainstream education.In addition to the already internationally prevalent methodologies, such as content-based language teaching and sheltered subject matter instruction, the teaching approach known as literacy across the curriculum could be of some interest as well. It also focuses on the relationship between language and learning, but targets both native speakers and second language learners, taking into consideration the partly negative outcomes of the recent comparative PISA study.Investigation of the way in which a teaching approach focusing on the relationship between language and learning could be implemented in Greek mainstream classes leads to the conclusion that inclusion and successful mainstreaming depend on more widespread interventions into school education.
