Abstract:
Participation continues to be one of the most studied areas in the field of adult and continuing education. Researchers persist in systematic efforts to understand adults' decisions to engage in learning activities and factors influencing the decision to participate. This article explores some of the most relevant theory and research in the field, to show that most theoretical models of participation in learning activities which have been developed so far, have emphasised the effects of a complex mixture of structural, cultural, socioeconomic and psychological factors. However, nearly all are variants of an 'accumulation thesis'. In short, they prioritise the determining incpAuence of earlier adult behaviour on what education and training individuals undertake later in their lives.
