Abstract:
This paper explores the various forms of educational research as well as the teacher's role in the context of critical pedagogy. More specifically, we refer to educational research and educational action research from the perspective of Habermas' theory of cognitive interests, and explore the role of the teacher who is motivated by emancipatory interests. It becomes apparent that a teacher who is motivated by such interests inevitably becomes a researcher who, through dialogue with his/her students, and also with peers and parents, strives to enable them to make their voices heard. His /her goal is mutual understanding that will in turn contribute to critique and social change. Finally we argue that such a role is more democratic compared to those relating to technical and even practical interests.
