Probable oriental influences on two decorative motives in the traditional female dresses of Attica
Author:
Abstract:
The author examines two decorative motives encountered in the traditional female dresses of Attica from the time of Turkish domination up to the 20th century. Her researches, based both on literary testimonies and on photographic material, from the 18th century onwards, lead her to the conclusion that these motives, which are inspired from real vases, are traceable to the East, possibly India, from where they have been introduced in the Ottoman Empire. In the frame of this research, the author draws a broader picture of the social environment in the Arvanite communities of Attica, thus enabling the reader to take a glimpse of the cultural and ethnological background reflected in traditional dresses.
