The author addresses the question of «double» monasteries, i.e. the monasteries harboring people of both sexes. This practice, which originates in the early period of Christianity, is clearly prohibited in the Byzantine Empire, where, nevertheless, there are still traces of it. The author reproduces, translates and comments the text of a law of Emperor Justinian I on this issue.
