Abstract:
Ion Luca Caragiale (1852-1912) is considered the most important playwright of Romania. His family was of Greek origin, from the island of Hydra. Following the steps of his two oncles, who were actors, playwrights and stage directors, I. L. Caragiale devoted himself to literature and theater. He wrote novels, poems and fables, but became famous mainly for his plays (The Mother-in-Law, The Lost Letter, Calamity, etc.). Dramatic, ironic and subtle, the plays of Caragiale contributed to the renewal of Romanian theater, being at the same time a token of the vitality and creativity of the Greek community in Romania.
