Abstract:
The first part of this paper consists of a brief chronological review of the ancient Egyptian history and of the royal Dynasties. Emphasis is given to the principal Dynasties closely interlaced to the periods of high development (OK, MK, NK), as well as to the Hellenic names of the most illustrious pharaohs, as they are found in the texts of various ancient writers (Hërodotos, Diodöros Siculus, Manethön, Ploutarchos, & c.). In the second part a short introduction is given to the pharaonic titulary and to the five canonical names of Egyptian kings, while the case of Tufankhamün’s titulary features as an example. Furthermore, part of a certain hieroglyphic inscription, deriving from the Flaminian obelisk and dating from early Dynasty XIX, is examined. This inscription has been initially published before the decipherment of hieroglyphs, then studied by various authors, and is here reprised, studied, commented and discussed; its correct translation from ancient Egyptian into Hellenic is also given. It is proposed that the name Hemapion, referred to as the source of the ancient Hellenic translation of the Egyptian inscription by Ammianus Marcellinus is fictitious. It is argued that the ancient historian might have used this name as a virtually unknownauthority, but in reality he might be the true translator of the inscription (or presumably the one that referred to this issue), because of his deep interest in the science and language of various ancient nations including the Egyptians.
