Analyzing the various school manuals used for the teaching of the lesson of Composition in Greek High-schools from 1874 to 1909, the author shows how the educational system of that period, with its purist, authoritarian, static and formalistic structure, failed to promote genuine linguistic skills and intellectual creativity, but rather served as a mechanism of manipulation and indoctrination of pupils, based merely on sterile repetition, thus contributing to the maintaining of a backwater culture falsely posing as the heir of ancient Greek legacy.
