Identity and otherness in education and culture : the philosophical foundation of education according to Plato and Aristotle
Author:
Abstract:
According to Plato, the value of justice is twofold: it constitutes a superior moral concept in and by itself (identity, tauton), and it is also of paramount importance due to its results and consequences, both individual and collective (otherness, to eteron ). The author explores this double character of justice in connection with the field of education of youth. Advocating for the need of equilibrated and humane education of all peoples, he stresses the significance of enlightened guidance towards moral goals, defined by ancient philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle. Thus, education is not merely a process of acquiring technical and specialized knowledge, but also and above all a constant spiritual endeavour aiming at the betterment of individuals and societies alike.
