Abstract:
In the period preceding the Greek Insurrection of 1821, the need for hospitals and for other health care foundations was urgent in Greek regions under Turkish rule. Therefore, several donators offered considerable funds to that purpose. One of them was a clergyman, Kyrillos, Metropolitan of Pissidia, who wished to contribute to the foundation of a hospital in his native city of Tsaritsani, in the region of Thessaly. Unfortunately, his efforts remained fruitless because the notables of Tsaritsani were reluctant to complete the sum required, as they probably thought that the city’s inhabitants were being sufficiently taken care of by community and itinerant doctors. Another probable reason for their negative attitude is that they might have feared that such an initiative could have been considered as a sign of wealth, thus inciting he rapacious semi-autonomous ruler of Ioannina, the infamous Ali Pacha, to commit extractions against them.
