The works of Christos Christovassilis (1862- 1937) in Greek education

From 1914 to 1980, selected works by novelist Christos Christovassilis were systematically included in the textbooks used in primary and secondary Greek schools. His interest in Greek folklore and in naturalistic descriptions is the main reason for this preference, although in many occasions his writings were considerably altered in order to comply with the desiderata of moralistic, puritan and ethnocentric education, especially in the classes of primary schools. After having analyzed these aspects of Christovassilis ’ presence in Greek schoolbooks, the author presents us with an addendum, listing all Christovassilis ’ texts used in primary and secondary educational programs.
