Panagiotis Kanellopoulos has been one of the most important personalities of Greek political and intellectual life in the 20 th century. As a politician, he participated in many right-wing governments, and became Prime Minister in 1965. In the face of political tensions and struggles between left and right, he always chose the way of moderation, appeasement and national reconciliation. He was the most important right-wing politician to stand energetically against the military junta that overthrew democracy in 1967, a stance that was duly recognized by all political forces after the restoration of democratic government in 1974. Moreover, he was, since 1933, an eminent professor of Sociology in the University of Athens, and in 1957 he was elected member of the Athens Academy. As an author, he composed literary works both in verse and in prose, but his most important contribution to the cultural development of contemporary Greece are his political, sociological and historical essays. In these, Kanellopoulos expresses his opinions about historical continuity of the Greek nation, personal moral responsibility and predominance of European spirit and culture.
