An Athenian installation in Thracian Brea : c. 445 B.C.

An inscription discovered at the Erechtheion in the 19th century and conserved at the Epigraphic Museum of Athens contains a decree pertaining to the foundation, in Thrace, of a city named Brea by the Athenians in the 5 th century B.C. The author presents and analyses that inscription, in an attempt to determine the circumstances and the character of Brea’s foundation. Comparing the information contained in the inscription with other literary and historical sources, he concludes that Brea was probably founded in 445 B.C. More controversial is the question whether Brea was an “apoikia ” or a “klerouchia”, as evidence points toward both directions; the author believes that it was a colony of the latter type, albeit presenting several characteristics of the former.
