A short comment to the “Praise for Ugo Foscolo” (Elogio di Ugo Foscolo) by Dionysios Solomos
Abstract:
The Praise for Ugo Foscolo was composed by Dionysios Solomos, the national poet of Greece, in 1827, on the occasion of the death of the great Italian poet Ugo Foscolo, who was born in the Greek island of Zante (Zakynthos), as was Solomos himself. The death of Foscolo occurred at a crucial stage of Solomos’ literary career, and so the Praise is not an ordinary epitaph, but rather a multi-layered text offering a profound insight into the political and cultural conditions necessary for the rebirth of the Greek nation in the frame of its struggle for freedom and spiritual revival. Despite its importance as a literary, political and theoretical manifesto, the Praise has been poorly studied up to the present day; consequently, the author’s endeavo r consists in stressing its significance, highlighting its important place in Solomos’ literary work, but also in his fight for Greek liberty and cultural renewal.
