Whilst the study of ancient Greek and the classical languages in general is steadily declining in Europe, there are numerous voices advocating for the utility of classical studies, and especially of the knowledge of ancient Greek, as a means of underlying the specificity of European identity in the era of globalization. In Italy, the cradle of Humanism, the Greek legacy has always been very strong, and in modern times a great number of intellectuals (writers, artists, cinematographers, etc.) have been influenced by ancient Greek culture, even when they had no direct knowledge of the ancient Greek language. From the Renaissance to the 18 th century and then to our times, from Marcilio Ficino to Pier Paolo Pasolini, Italian thinkers and creators have always turned to the classical world for guidance and inspiration. A Europe without Greek, claims the author, would be an incomplete Europe, without historical memory, but also without any perspective for the future.
