In 1745, a free paraphrase of Torquato Tasso’s pastoral comedy “Aminta” was anonymously published in Venice. As has been proved since 1969 by S. A. Evangelatos, the poet was Georgios Mormoris (1720-1790), a physician and philosopher from the island of Kythera. The paraphrase features the names of five locations from another island, Naxos, about the existence of which in the poem various suppositions have been made. Now one more is offered: As the legend goes, a Kytherian captain, whose ship was in danger of sinking, made a vow to the Holy Virgin of Myrtidia, the patroness of Kythera, to build a small church dedicated to Her Grace should he and his crew be saved. Indeed they were, and he built the church, about which we only know that it was finished before 1782, when it appears in a gravure. The building of the church denotes a relationship between Kytherians and Naxos.
