Abstract:
This paper is an appraisal of the metaphysical and religious concerns as revealed in George Theotokas’ plays. These concerns in his drama can be schematically divided into two periods: the 1940s and part of the 1950s, when the playwright’s work exhibited great interest in the external symbols of Greek Orthodoxy, and the 1950s and 1960s (until his death in 1966), when he revealed the more profound elements of his personal Christian belief, the mysticism of the holy Niptic tradition. This tradition encapsulated the spiritual essence of Orthodoxy. During this metaphysical quest, Theotokas was influenced by a wide variety of Greek and European literary figures, who either served the Christian faith and/or expressed existential concerns in their works (Sikelianos, Palamas, Papadiamantis, Makriyiannis, O’ Neill, T.S. Eliot, P. Claudel, A. Gide, Fr. Mauriac, B. Pasternak, F. Dostoyevsky, European symbolists, and many others). Moreover, it is evident that he was further influenced by the Catholic Personalist movement in his efforts to create a Hellenic-orthodox form of dramaturgy and literature.
