The reayas in the rural society of the Ottoman period
Abstract:
The reayas, i.e. the non-Moslem land cultivators under Ottoman rule, suffocated because of heavy taxation imposed by their Turkish overlords. The author examines various cases of obligations of that kind, depending on the tax type, on the particular status of the non-Moslem subject and on the evolution of land ownership during the successive periods of the Ottoman Empire. Furthermore, he stresses the negative role played by the Christian collaborators of the local administration, who sometimes used to behave like oppressors. All these factors contributed to the poor condition of land cultivators not only under Ottoman rule, but also in liberated Greece, because of the incomplete emancipation of rural population.
