Abstract:
The scope of the paper is to show that the writings attributed to Dionysius Areopagita not only sum up the negative theology of the East, according to which God is unattainable in His essence, but they also may be considered as early formulations of western scholasticism, which allows for the comprehension of some divine attributes. Inasmuch as, according to Dionysius, both human and angelic creatures participate in the essence of God, which is pure goodness, we can have an insight of His ultimate kindness. This can be achieved by virtue of analogic thought, i.e. by observing the functioning of natural laws, the non application of which only leads to perversion. Thus nature, being a creation of God, allows us to understand His perfection and generosity, whilst His innermost essence remains unknowledgeable.
