Abstract:
In this article, I explore the notion of the Uncanny, as depicted in Alfred Hitchcock’s films. At first I attempt a definition of the Freudian term Uncanny by concentrating on the famous article by Freud “Das Unheimlich” (1919). According to Freud, the “uncanny” is related to the experience of lack of boarders between reality and imagination and it provokes emotions of fear and insecurity related to the primary fear of castration. We often have an “uncanny experience”, when something which is familiar is mingled with something unfamiliar. I then analyse the different expressions of the Uncanny in five of Hitchcock’s films: “North by Northwest”, “The Birds”, “Rear Window”, “The Wrong Man”,’’Vertigo”.
