Abstract:
Intense and extensive building construction in the alluvial plain of Attica, especially pronounced during the last decades, resulted in small rivers and torrents disappearing under tons of cement. Iridanos is one of those ancient torrents whose existence is known exclusively from ancient sources, excavation findings around Keramikos cemetery, and recent boreholes drilled during the construction of the Athens metro stations. In this study a paleogeographic representation of the ancient river course is attempted, taking into account ancient writers’ descriptions, locations within the modern city where traces of the river channel or river way have been certified, recent topography of the city, as well as underground data. Furthermore, a historical rétrogradation of direct human interference to the river channel is made, based both on ancient writers’ references and recent excavation results.
