Abstract:
Among European scholars in various fields (historians, linguists, philologists, ethnologists, anthropologists, etc.) who conducted scientific research on Greek folk culture, Austrians occupy a significant place. The list of those 19th and 20th century researchers includes W. von Haxthausen, one of the first systematic recensers of Greek popular songs; J.G. von Hahn, the Austrian consul who studied Greek folk-tales comparing them to ancient myths; eminent linguist P. Kretsmer, who delved into the study of various modern Greek dialects; L. Salvator, an erudite traveller of aristocratic origin who wrote extensively about folk culture in Zante; comparative ethnologist L. Kretzenbacher, who focused on Orhtodox religious customs and practices; and W. Puchner, well known for his studies on the theatrical dimension of a vast array of manifestations linked to Greek popular culture.
