Abstract:
In the present paper (which consists, so far as is known, the first extended scientific attempt towards the presentation of the ancient Egyptian writing system in Greece), an introduction is given of the ancient Egyptian language and writing, supplemented by rich bibliographic references (relative to this same theme, as well as to the ancient Egyptian literature and philology). This paper proceeds as follows: after a short introduction, a reference is given to the decipherment of the hieroglyphic script; then the principal characteristics of the ancient Egyptian language are presented (with emphasis on some paradigms of the suffix conjugation), together with the evolution of this language, after which follows a concisepresentation of the very essence of the ancient Egyptian writing system, supplemented by several examples from the Hellenic language (which clarify the principles of homeophony and rebus, indigenous to the former writing system); finally a brief introduction is given of the ancientEgyptian literature and of the scribal tradition, which is followed by a short epilogue (concerned with the interrelations and interactions of the hieroglyphic system of writing with other — geographically adjacent— writing systems).
