Abstract:
The discovery of a prehistoric mound lying about 5 Km. north of Kardhitsa, in western Thessaly, is thought to be a very important addition to our knowledge of the extent of occupation of the Neolithic period in Thessaly. The surface finds include a large number of monochrome, incised and painted sherds, belonging to the Early, Middle and Late Neolithic periods, as well as to the Early Bronze Age. Especially interesting is an «ear-stud» and a sherd with painted representation of a human figure (fig. 1) belonging to the so called «Protosesklo» phase and comparable to similar finds from Argissa (fig. 2), Otzaki and Soufli Maghoula. To judge from the presence of the ear-stud, the very beginning of the new prehistoric settlement would be dated to the Preceramic Period or, at least, to the earliest ceramic Neolithic. On the other hand, the above mentioned painted sherd is very important in posing the question whether or not the «early painted» Neolithic pottery was decorated with human representations. In view of its perfect drawing it shows evidence probably of a preneolithic tradition for Neolithic idols of the «Protosesklo» period.
