Abstract:
The portrait head of Emperor Trajan presented here belongs to a private collection of Athens. The material is pentelic marble and the face battered. Its height is 0.375 m. (height of head 0.29m.). The front side of the neck bears the inscription ΕΡΜΗΣ. There is no doubt that the portrait head is the remaining part of a statue of Trajan, that was lost. It can be dated around 110 A.D. This portrait head of Trajan reflects an attitude of Christian ‘humilitas’,represented by the artist as a desirable expression in portraiture. In my opinion, the Greek artist of this portrait head from the Athens collection has created one of the most expressive pictures of Trajan. Its religious and political character prompts us to a new study and re-classification of the types of portraits of Roman Emperors on the basis of a morphological factor in portraiture consisting of the reflection of the inner world of the person portrayed by the artist.
