Dimitrios Gouzelis : a “democratic” scholar in the chariot of the Enlightenment

An examination of the entire intellectual output of the Zakynthian writer Dimitris Gouzelis, focussing especially on the literary works, both original and in translation, of the author of Chasis (1790, 1795). This paper, beginning by looking at his early satire, proposes a new reading of his later works, in combination with his liberal beliefs and his revolutionary, democratic activities. The views and opinions that he expressed in his writing chart his movement away from the Italian influence of the Ionian Islands and the penetration into his thinking - chiefly via his French education - of other equally important factors.
