Abstract:
An unpublished hand-written translation of the one-act play Die Quäker (1812) by August von Kotzebue made by Ioannis Sergiou Papadopoulos is retrieved on a manuscript of the Rumanian Academy in Bucharest. Research has concluded that it has been made by the same author who translated also Goethe’s Iphigeneia (1818) and died at the age of 25 from tuberculosis. He must have been instigated in his choice of play by its interesting subject about the strange religious sect of the Quakers, who serve the Christian ideals of moral virtue by proving the absurdity of war. The young translator disguises his language incompetence pretty well, presenting a text without essential logical gaps and sufficient consistency.
