Abstract:
In the autumn of 1971 a short excavation was carried out on the acropolis of ancient Melitaea ( Avaritsa ) situated on the North-West slope of mountain Orthrys, near Thessaly.A building of trapezoidal shape was uncovered in Section A, which includes a rock with a natural cleft of 290 - 320 m. depth. Further to the East of the above building lie the remains of another one of similar shape, which had been destroyed by a later byzantineoccupation. In the South - West corner of this area ( see plan 1, area B ) was found an inscribed marble base of a votive offering to the god Asklepios.Just parallel to the above building there is a stoa ( excavated length 26.80 m., width 3.10 m. ) divided unequally into nine small rooms. When the excavation is completed, it may prove the existence of a shrine of Asklepios on the high top of the acropolis of Melitaea.A quite large number of votive offerings have been found, as well as a lot of Hellenistic, Roman, Frankish and Byzantine coins.Section B. Part of the fortification wall ( end of 4th century B.C., see plan 2, and figs. 13-14) was unearthed on the South slope of the acropolis.
