Abstract:
MytileneFoundation works for the building of OTE at the function of Vournazon and Ch. Trikoupis Street brought to light part of an ancient road along the length of the building plot, leading from SE to NW, probably to the South Gate of the ancient town, and part of an elongated building at the SW corner of the plot, almost parallel to the road. This is consisting of two parallel walls constructed in the irregular isodomus masonry, with blocks of hard red stone, carrying two rows of resisting beams of poros, the one 1,50 m. under the other, at a distance of 1,90 m. between the beams of the lower row.It is probably part of an aqueduct of the 4th century B.C., and correlating with an inscription found in Mytilene ( IG XII, Suppl, p. 2, n. 4) constitutes significant element for the topography of the ancient town because it will lead to the sanctuary of Asklepios.KlopediDuring a small excavation investigation in the area of the Sanctuary of Klopedi, east of the Temple B, there was discovered a «wall», consisting of a row of hard stone blocks, and around it, almost at the earth surface, many sherds of grey Lesbian bucchero wares were found, some with incised or stamped geometric decoration. Tentative trenches on the foot of the hill of the Sanctuary and at the field of Z. Alepides brought to light two aeolic capitals and other architectural members of the temples of the Sanctuary. Other two aeolic capitals, many parts of capitals, bases and parts of columns were found at the round fields and walls, at a distance of 3 km, which concentrated in the space of the Sanctuary for a complete study of the aeolic order of Lesbos.
