News from Lianokladi in Phthiotis

A brief investigation, in the known prehistoric settlement of Lianokladi in Phthiotis, carried out at the site Palio- mylos by the crossing of the Sper- cheias - Hypate roads, has revealed the northern section of an apsidal house with SE - NW orientation.A straight wall running horizontally to the vertical parts of the apse separates a room (fig. 1 ) entered from the west end of the wall. This probably served as storeroom to the partly uncovered house, as suggested by the discovery in the floor of four crudely made pithoi of domestic use bearing clear traces of fire, in addition to the other pottery (fig. 7 ) of the early MH period found in situ. Another wheel - made storage - jar ( of 2.10 m. height ), full of remains of animal and plant matter, was situated south of the above - mentioned partition wall. The hearth unearthed next to the wall completes the picture of the house, which lay in the same level as the house of three aligned rooms investigated by Wace and Thompson (Wace-Thom- pson’s Stratum III ).There has been a notable verification of the stratigraphical formation described in the Wace - Thompson study ( down to the depth of 2 m. reached so far ). A large percentage of the numerous pottery collected consists of matt - painted, glazed, and grey Minyan vases ( cups with superposed rings at the base, monochrome footless kylikes ). Category Al was more sparsely represented, and the well - known Category A3b ( Lianokladi Style ) was identified in only a few dozens of sherds.
