Abstract:
The present article explores the limits of interculturalism in scenic practice through the formulated definitions of theatre theorists as well as through the Greek example, apparent in contemporary scenic interpretations of ancient Greek drama. The article begins with Karolos Koun’s written texts, where the director traces intercultural subjects -contrary to the ideology of greekness evident in his scenic realizations-, and then it centers on the intercultural character of the “scenic writing” of two contemporary Greek directors: Theodoras Terzopoulos in his direction of Euripides’ Bacchae and Giorgos Kimoulis in his direction of Sophocles’Antigone. By placing in the centre of interculturalism the concept of “border”, its fluidity and its crossing through as an act of cultural (not historical) meaning, the article introduces the concept of native director-anthropologist. The latter sets out from the cultural substratum of his country and follows up the deep roots that connect it with the corresponding substratum of different societies, forgotten folklore practices and anthropological acting. Both directors starting off by different routes and using different tools and codes -the first one ritual, centering on the bodyness, the second camival-introduce “scripts” about borders and their crossing through. Thus, they engage their observers to the meaning of native, intercultural direction lined up against the domestic, cultural language, as well as against the multi-cultural and ultra-cultural language that other directors of Greek drama use.
