Abstract:
Recently has been found the missing Hidden Sun, an one-act play, by Iakovos Kambanellis. In 1949 the writer had given it to the director Adamantios Lemos but although it gained a positive judgment it was never performed. It takes place in a cell at the Inzersdorf concentration camp, in Austria. An escape has been done, the prisoners are interrogated and one betrays. But, the main question of Hidden Sun is not who is the betrayer but in which base the human existence is justified. The writer’s thought moves in a wide human sphere where two basic ideas dominate: man is responsible for his life and history and the justification of his existence can only be accomplished through his relationships with the others. The play is full of scenic instructions providing the necessary information. The narrative parts help to the completeness of the characters’ portraits.Hidden Sun has autobiographical character as the writer had been imprisoned in this camp, and strong relationship with various plays, texts, even films, about this period. In writer’s posteriors plays we recognize some characters and meet same motives, for example the “imaginable supper”.The play is written in the years of an internal strife and argues brave and annoying ideas about the unbending ethic, the univocal moral norms and life’s extremities.
