Abstract:
The current study constitutes the presentation and combined elaboration of research findings, that was undertaken on the Archives of Propaganda Fede in Vatican in the spring of 2002 and 2003 within the framework of the research programme Greek Theatre and Drama during the Middle Ages, the Renaissance and the Turkish Domination. In the archive records that have been revealed in the last few years, newly discovered evidence are added for brilliant religious ceremonies and para-theatrical displays (manifestations), which were a well-known practice of the Catholic Orders in the Aegean islands. The Sunday (Orthodox) liturgy, the feast of Corpus Domini, the Good Friday, the last day of the carnival and other big religious ceremonies, gave to the Jesuits and the Capuchins of islands like Chios, Naxos and Mykonos the chance to organise parades and dramatic representations of religious content, using the young disciples of their schools, often with the intent to catechise and even convert. The first part of the study contains the new data, elaborated by prof. W. Pouchner, whereas on the second part the documents in which new information was located by G. Varzelioti and were discovered by her on the Jesuits archives in Rome (Propaganda Fede) are presented.
