Abstract:
The reason for our study was the Naxian placenames (Polichni, Sangri, Drymalia, Aperathou, Flerio) which strangely enough appear in seven verses of Georgios Mormoris’ Amyntas (III, 397-404).Why should these Naxian placenames occur? How did Mormoris come to know these names?Although scholars and travelers refer to Naxos as one of the most famous hunting areas of that time, there is no contemporary printed source where placenames and hunting areas are mentioned from which Mormoris could obtain pertinent information. Moreover he doesn’t seem to have clear knowledge of the topography of the area. The only possibilities Mormoris had of learning these placenames are the following:• A visit to Naxos in his youth.• Acqaintance with the island from reports of Naxians in Cythera.• Contact with Naxians in Padua or Venice, who told him about the island and its hunting areas.• Friendship with a young Naxian girl in Padua or Venice and subsequent inclusion of the Naxian placenames and legendary hunting areas in order to "flatter" her.
