Abstract:
A trial excavation, undertaken in the summer of 1974 on the hill of Kastri near Mantoudi, at the site of ancient Kerinthos was extended along three sectors.Sector I. Two trenches were dug on the east side of the acropolis. There came to light walls of 4th century B.C. buildings, probably metal workshops, as suggested by abundant traces of corrosion. Three burials of later date were discovered inside the buildings.Sector II. A building complex, dated to the 4th - 3rd century B.C., was excavated at the summit of the hill. The walls were constructed with both unworked and half- worked stones. Four rooms ( A, B, Γ, Δ ) were partly excavated; these contained a largenumber of pottery andoneinscription. The excavation, which reached to the depth of the natural rock, revealed the existence of small deposits ( 0.70 - 0.80 m. ) of the Classical and Hellenistic periods at the top of the acropolis.Sector III. A building, originally constructed in the early Archaic period, was excavated towards the north side of the hill. The numerous ceramic finds, which are of exceptional quality, date from the 7th, 6th and 5th centuries B.C. A large number of sherds form the lid of a red-figure lekanis dated to the end of the 5th century B.C. Beneath the floor of Room A lay the ruins of an older wall of the Geometric age. Deeper layers contained EH sherds and stone tools.
