Abstract:
At the foot of the hill of Prophet Elias, about 1 km. south of ancient Kerinthos, a trial trench was dug in a field which had yielded surface finds consisting of numer- •ous sherds and tools. On the east and west sides the trench reached to the natural rock, at a depth of 1.70 m. Three layers of the MH period were discerned. Finds included many sherds of coarse monochrome ware, Minyan pottery, and a few matt - painted pieces dating from the beginning of the MH period.Walls of ancient buildingswere unearthedat the N. W. corner of the dig. One of the walls belongs to an apsidal building. Under a pebble floor was discovered a skeleton of the MH period. The dead lay upon the rock in the contracted position characteristic of MH burials, and was not accompanied by funerary gifts. From various other parts of the field were collected sherds and stone tools of the Neolithic and EH periods. This denotes a continuous habitation of the site in prehistoric times.
