Abstract:
Φλάβιος ’Αλέξανδρος as strutegos of the Thessalian league in the first half of the second century AD, thus dating the third of the four new manumission inscriptions from Echinos. (Λ. Γουναροπούλου, «Τέσσερις καινούριες απελευθερωτικές επιγραφές από τον ’Αχινό Λαμίας» ’Αμητός. Τιμητικός τόμος για τον καθηγητή Μ. ’Ανδρόνικο, Θεσσαλονίκη 1987, 251-259 και πίν. 53) must be identified with Τίτ(ον) Φλάβιον ’Αλέξανδρον τον σοφιστήν... σύνεδρον Θεσσαλών 'ΐπαταΐον (FD, III 4, 474).The clause έφ’ ώ χρηματίζειν... does not mean paramone, but should be closely associated with the slave’s appelation, after his manumission.The «delendum» ταΐς την πόλιν should not be attributed to an error of the lapidary, but to an «itacistic» phaenomenon, instead of τά εις την πόλιν.Finally, the completeness of and similarity in the formulae of the new inscriptions permit an improvement in the reading of the older, fragmentarily preserved manumission texts from Echinos: IG, IX 2, 92, AJPh 92 (1971) 667-675.
