The bishop of Philippi Demetrius and the early christian monuments of the city of Philippi

Demetrius is one of the few known bishops of the city of Philippi during the Early Byzantine period. According to the sources he was active in the years of the early reign of Justinian, from 531 to 534 AD. He was a member of the imperial entourage; Justinian had charged him with important missions, in collaboration with Hypatius, bishop of Ephesus. Although there is no secure evidence of Demetrius’ building activities in the city, the existence of two ambons in two of the churches of Philippi during the first half of the 6th century could be attributed to his presence in the episcopal see. On the other hand the ambitious building programm of Basilica B, which bears close resemblance to the justinianic churches of the capital, especially Hagia Eirene, should probably be associated with a high-standing patron, related to the Imperial Court, such as the bishop Demetrius.
