Sherds from Sane in Pallene : observations on the trade of Greek vases and the colonization of Chalkidike

This is the first publication of a number of sherds found at Sane on the Pailene peninsula and kept in the Museum of Plaster Casts of the University of Thessaloniki. The most interesting among these sherds are published individually in the initial part of the study, whereas the others are presented in lots according to their workship provenience. One of the sherds gives me the opportunity to discuss the «linear insular style». I argue that the workshop producing vases of this «group» had probably settled at Thera, although this is by no means certain. Indeed, if this sherd is really Cyc-ladic, the fact that it was found at Sane leads me to believe that the potters of this workshop came from the island of Paros, whose relations with the northern Greek area are well known.Another sherd from a kotyle is particularly important not only because it was decorated by one of the leading painters of Attic vases of the early 6th cent. B.C., the KX painter, but also because it is one of the earliest black figured vases found until now in nothern Greece. Another sherd from a Siana cup with the representation of a phalanx of running hoplites is interesting not only on account of its representation, which gives me the opportunity to express some thoughts on the possible relationship between this subject and the hoplite race, but also because it comes from an Attic workshop, that of Lydos, which was represented until now in the northern Aegean and the Black Sea only by large vases, especially column kraters. Among the sherds from Sane I had the chance to discover a fragment of fine decorated lakonian pottery. Lakonian vases are extremely rare in this area and I take this opportunity to make a few observations on the recent opinion of R.M. Cook concerning the diffusion of lakonian pottery. Finally a fragment from a terracotta relief is the point of departure for some reflections on the so-called «Melian reliefs». The other sherds from Sane clearly show that Attic and Corinthian vases were predominant. Most of them probably come from the deposit of a sanctuary. The next section is a review the archaeological material from Sane published to this date as well as the recorded archaeological activities in the area, after which I tackle the problem of the identification and history of Sane and the colonization of Chalkidike. The archaeological material that has come to light, combined with the scarce written sources on this subject, lead me to agree with those who believe that during the second wave of colonization the southern Greeks turned not only towards the West, but also towards the northern Greek area. As far as Chalkidike is concerned, I find particularly plausible the opinion of D. Bradeen, according to which the Euboeans were well aquainted with the region and had already settled there at an earlier date.
