Excavation of an early helladic settlement on Euboea

Mourteri is an inlet on the S side of Chondros river (fig. 1 ). There are re- the gulf of Kyme at the mouth of the mains of a prehistoric settlement at the Ν side of the inlet on a hillock ; erosion and sea water seem to have destroyed part of it.The excavations at Kastri ( Ano Po-tamia, near Kyme ) during the summer of 1976 made it possible to conduct an exploratory excavation at Mourteri. Trench I revealed remains of an apsidal building of the EH II period and part of a second building ( figs. 3 - 5 ). The apsidal building had two floors, one on top of the other, consisting of stampedearth and pebbles from the seashore. Trench II revealed a rectangular building (figs. 5, 6, 7 ) of the same period. A storage jar was found in situ. The pottery is uniform and dates consistently to the EH II period. It falls in the following categories:1. Coarse ware (figs. 8, 9, 17). A great number of these sherds have athin slip the colour of the clay. Bowls and closed pots are the standard shapes.2. Slipped and burnished ware ( fig.10).3. Glazed ware ( Urfirnis ).
